The 2026 Football Prediction Accuracy Report

We logged 2241 football predictions before kickoff, across 43 competitions, and let live results settle them automatically. The headline: Bawler's main Most likely call landed 75.8% of the time (1699 of 2241). Just as important is whether picks land as often as the confidence Bawler gives them, which is the real test of whether a prediction means anything: in 7 of 9 confidence bands they land within 5 points of it.

The finding: how far the confidence can be trusted

Anyone can post one lucky prediction. The harder question is whether a tool's confidence is trustworthy — when it says a pick is 75% likely, does it actually land about three times in four? We grouped every single-outcome pick by the confidence Bawler assigned it, then compared that number to how often those picks really won. In 7 of the 9 bands below — holding 5,270 of the 5,597 picks — the two figures are within 5 points of each other. The widest gap is the 10–20% band: picks given 18.9% on average actually landed 32.4% of the time (37 picks), so the model's confidence is less reliable there.

Bands with fewer than 20 picks are omitted to avoid small-sample noise. "Actually won" is the share of picks in that confidence band that settled as a win.

“Most likely” accuracy by competition

The main “Most likely” call — the safest of the three — broken down by league, for the competitions with the most settled predictions. These are the regional cuts most useful for a specific desk.

How the study was run

  • Sample: every one of the 2241 Bawler picks that had settled between 18 March 2026 and 12 October 2026, across 43 competitions. Nothing was cherry-picked and no losing picks were removed.
  • Logged before kickoff: each pick is published and locked at about 5pm UK time, typically 2 days before kickoff. Since 28 May 2026 a snapshot of every published pick is anchored to Bitcoin each morning, and some matches also get their own proof shortly before kickoff. 1,489 of the 2,241 graded calls are covered by a proof made before kickoff; the 710 from before 28 May 2026 predate anchoring, and 42 later ones were not captured in a snapshot. Check any snapshot at /verify.
  • Settled automatically: results come from live match data. We do not hand-grade, delete losers, or backdate winners.
  • The three calls: every match gets a Most likely call (the safest) and usually an Outside shot (deliberately the least likely of the three). A Close call pick is made only when the model has one, so 742 of the 2,241 graded matches have none. Each call is scored on its own outcome.
  • Confidence: each pick carries a probability from Bawler's model, which is built on expected goals for both teams. The calibration table compares that stated confidence to what actually happened.
  • Reproducible: the full pick history, misses included, is public at /track-record — recompute any figure above yourself.
