West Ham United have completed the signing of Arne Engels from Celtic in a deal worth £22m, confirmed by the club on 16 August 2026. The fee, understood to be around €25.75m, is a record amount paid by a club playing outside the Premier League, beating the £17.5m Ipswich Town paid last year for striker Sindre Egeli. The 22-year-old Belgium international has signed a five-year contract, keeping him at London Stadium until 2031.
West Ham dropped out of the Premier League last season after 14 years in the top flight and are aiming to bounce straight back under manager Nuno Espírito Santo. Paying a Championship-record fee for a player of Engels' profile is a clear signal of intent. He is comfortable operating as a holding midfielder or further up the pitch in a box-to-box role, and West Ham see him as a player capable of controlling games in the Championship while being well suited to an eventual return to the Premier League.
Engels leaves Celtic after two years in Glasgow, during which he made 100 appearances and won the Scottish Premiership title last season. He had joined from German club Augsburg in 2024 for a reported €13m and became an important part of the midfield, though he fell out of favour for a spell under Brendan Rodgers before rediscovering his best form after Rodgers left the club in October 2025. Martin O'Neill, who took charge following Rodgers' exit, confirmed Engels' departure and said Celtic would look to replace him with "a box-to-box midfield player with real physicality." Engels posted a farewell message thanking supporters, saying he was leaving with "nothing but gratitude" after lifting trophies and creating what he called "unforgettable memories" at the club.
Engels had made only a handful of appearances for Celtic so far this season before the move, playing 180 minutes without scoring but picking up one assist. That followed a strong 2025-26 campaign in which he made 30 Scottish Premiership appearances and scored five goals, one of Celtic's most consistent performers as they won the title — a marked improvement after a difficult start under Rodgers.
At West Ham, Engels is expected to add composure and range to the midfield as Nuno Espírito Santo's side target an immediate promotion push. Known for his vision, passing and work rate, he can play in a double pivot or as the more advanced of two central midfielders, giving the Hammers more control in games than they had for long spells last season. He was not registered in time for West Ham's Championship opener against Burnley but is available for the home game against Charlton Athletic on 22 August, which is likely to be his first appearance for the club.
The move is West Ham's biggest outlay since relegation and underlines how seriously the club are treating life in the Championship. For Celtic, the sale banks a substantial fee from a player bought for a fraction of the price two years ago, giving the Scottish champions funds to reinvest as they continue to compete domestically and in Europe.
