Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of Cristian Romero from Tottenham Hotspur, with the move confirmed on 15 August 2026. The Argentina centre-back has joined the Spanish club in a deal worth around €40m (£34.2m), signing a five-year contract that runs until June 2031. Tottenham have reportedly kept a 15 per cent sell-on clause, meaning they stand to benefit if Atletico sell the 28-year-old for a profit further down the line. The transfer ends a five-year spell in north London that began when Romero arrived from Atalanta in 2022, and brings him back into a league he knows well from his time in Serie A.
Diego Simeone was the driving force behind the deal, having made no secret of his admiration for Romero. Earlier this year the Atletico coach said: "I speak from a point of view as an Argentina fan. I admire his personality, his character, his defensive work and his football ability on the ball." Simeone wanted a leader who could add nous and toughness to an Atletico defence that lacked its usual solidity last season, and Romero's experience as a Premier League regular and Argentina international made him a natural target. On completing the move, Romero said he was "very happy, very delighted" to join the club and promised to "give my all".
Tottenham lose their captain and one of the most influential figures in the club's recent history. Romero was named Player of the Match in the 2025 Europa League final and Player of the Season for the competition as Spurs ended a 17-year wait for a trophy, and he made 156 appearances in all competitions during his time at the club. His departure, though, follows a difficult 2025-26 season in which he served four separate suspensions, was publicly critical of the club's transfer business, and had his campaign ended early by a knee injury picked up in April, with Spurs then in the relegation zone. Thomas Frank has already moved to cover the gap at centre-back, bringing in Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke over the summer and handing Micky van de Ven a new long-term contract.
Romero's numbers from last season point to a player who was still contributing directly in matches even as his disciplinary record became a talking point. He played 1,872 minutes in the Premier League, scoring four goals and adding an assist, and posted an average match rating of 7.06 according to FotMob. That was offset by nine yellow cards and two reds, part of a pattern of suspensions that, combined with the injury, meant he featured far less than Tottenham would have liked in the second half of the campaign.
At Atletico, Romero is expected to slot straight into Simeone's back line alongside the club's senior defenders, bringing physicality and a combative edge that fits the manager's long-standing approach. He may not be involved immediately: reports suggest he is short of match fitness after Argentina's involvement in this summer's World Cup, meaning his debut is more likely to come against Villarreal on 23 August or Sevilla on 29 August than in this week's opener against Malaga.
